The City of Okemah is relying on the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office for law enforcement support after a wave of departures left the local police force without leadership or manpower.
What Happened in Okemah?
Five officers—including the chief of police—either resigned or were terminated, leaving the city unable to staff its department. The situation forced city officials to seek immediate outside help to maintain order.
How the State is Responding
Agents from the Attorney General’s office will temporarily take over law enforcement operations within Okemah. Their role is to keep policing functional until the city can recruit and train enough officers to restore its department.
“I am not afraid to make such a move if it means law and order is maintained in Okemah. When local communities face challenges that threaten public safety, it is our responsibility to ensure that law-abiding citizens remain protected,” Drummond said. “My office will maintain a strong law enforcement presence in Okemah for as long as necessary, but my agents are approaching their work with professionalism and compassion.”
City leaders have not provided details on why the mass departure occurred, but residents are being reassured that public safety remains a priority during this transitional period.
