Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games Need 1,500 Volunteers

The Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games are returning to Stillwater this week, but organizers say they still urgently need more than 1,500 volunteers before the massive statewide event begins.

More than 5,000 athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters are expected to gather at Oklahoma State University for the three-day event beginning this week.

Organizers with the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games say volunteers remain critical to helping sporting events, athlete activities, check-ins, scoring, medal presentations, and Olympic Village operations run smoothly.

According to Special Olympics Oklahoma, volunteer opportunities remain open for people across Oklahoma wanting to help during the event.

Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games Return to Stillwater

The Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games will feature 10 sporting competitions across the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater.

Events include softball, bocce ball, and several other athletic competitions involving athletes from across Oklahoma.

Summer Games Director Paul Fox said organizers are preparing to host approximately 5,400 participants throughout the event.

Fox said volunteers play a major role in ensuring athletes, families, and coaches have a successful experience during the games.

The growing size of the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games has increased the need for community support and volunteer participation.

Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games

Organizers say volunteers are still needed for a wide range of responsibilities during the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games.

Volunteer assignments include helping athletes, managing event venues, distributing medals, handling scorekeeping duties, and assisting with Olympic Village activities.

Fox said many volunteers return every year because of the experience and connection with athletes.

“You can be having the worst week of your life, and you come here to these games, and you mess around with these athletes and high five and all that kind of stuff, and it just makes all your problems seem very, very small,” Fox said.

Additional volunteer information for the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games is available through Special Olympics Oklahoma event registration resources.

Law Enforcement Torch Run Returns for Summer Games

The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run will again help open the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games this year.

Law enforcement agencies from across Oklahoma participate in the long-running tradition by carrying the “Flame of Hope” into the opening ceremonies.

Fox also serves on the board overseeing the statewide torch run events.

The torch is expected to travel from Edmond to Stillwater ahead of the opening ceremonies at Oklahoma State University.

Organizers say the torch remains one of the most meaningful traditions connected to the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games each year.

Style blogger. Every tweed blazer and pinstripe shirt I shoot turns into a moire disaster, and changing lenses doesn't fully fix it. After running through this fabric tool the weave texture is actually preserved — not smeared into plasticky nothing like some AI filters do.
