Sooner Safe tornado preparedness program led by Miami FFA students
A Sooner Safe tornado preparedness program is helping students across northeast Oklahoma learn how to stay safe as severe weather season intensifies.
Students in Miami Public Schools are leading the effort, using hands-on lessons to prepare younger classmates for tornado threats.
The initiative comes as Oklahoma faces an already active start to the 2026 tornado season.
Sooner Safe tornado preparedness program started by student idea
The Sooner Safe tornado preparedness program began with a single idea brought back from an FFA conference.
Miami High School student Tylor Aary said the goal was to reduce fear and confusion around tornado safety.
“Tornadoes are very frequent in our community… I grew up terrified of tornadoes because I didn’t understand what they were and how to be safe,” Aary said.
Student-led programs like this are supported by organizations such as the National FFA Organization.
Students reach every school in the district
The Sooner Safe tornado preparedness program expanded quickly across the district.
FFA members visited every school in Miami Public Schools, working directly with younger students.
They explained step-by-step safety plans, including where to go and what to do when severe weather strikes.
Severe weather education and alerts are supported by agencies like the National Weather Service (NWS).
Emergency go bags distributed to students
The Sooner Safe tornado preparedness program also provides practical tools for emergencies.
Students partnered with community groups to distribute 100 emergency go bags to upper elementary and junior high students.
The bags are designed to help students stay prepared during dangerous storm situations.
Emergency preparedness efforts are often supported by agencies like the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.
Project comes during active tornado season
The Sooner Safe tornado preparedness program is launching at a critical time.
Officials say Oklahoma has already recorded 56 tornadoes statewide this year, increasing the urgency for preparedness.
FFA leaders say the project highlights how students are making a difference beyond the classroom, building skills in leadership, communication, and public safety.
