Sara Polston Release Sparks Outrage Across Oklahoma

The early Sara Polston release continues drawing outrage across Oklahoma after a newly released grand jury report accused Governor Kevin Stitt of showing “rank political favoritism” in the controversial case.

The Sara Polston release became one of the most talked-about political stories in the state after Polston served only 73 days of an eight-year prison sentence tied to a 2023 DUI crash in Norman that left 20-year-old Micaela Borrego with a traumatic brain injury and in a coma.

According to the Oklahoma State Courts Network, Polston originally received an eight-year sentence connected to the crash.

Sara Polston Release Draws Sharp Criticism

The newly released grand jury report stated Governor Stitt made multiple calls to the head of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections while Polston’s release was under review.

Jurors described the actions surrounding the Sara Polston release as “indefensible,” especially because of the severity of Borrego’s injuries and the political connections involved.

The report also noted that Polston and her husband donated nearly $27,800 to Stitt’s campaigns and hosted a political fundraiser supporting the governor.

Despite the criticism, the grand jury found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing and did not file charges against the governor or corrections officials.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections previously defended the release decision, arguing Polston qualified for the state’s GPS monitoring program under existing law for certain nonviolent offenders.

Oklahoma Lawmakers Respond to Sara Polston Release

Public backlash over the Sara Polston release quickly spread across Oklahoma and led to action at the state Capitol.

Lawmakers argued the GPS monitoring program was never intended for offenders involved in crashes causing catastrophic bodily injury.

In response, legislators approved Senate Bill 137, which bars individuals convicted of DUI causing great bodily injury from qualifying for the release program.

The full text of Senate Bill 137 shows the new restrictions approved by Oklahoma lawmakers following the controversy.

Governor Stitt allowed the legislation to become law without his signature earlier this month.

Governor Kevin Stitt Denies Wrongdoing

Governor Stitt has repeatedly denied wrongdoing connected to the Sara Polston release and dismissed the grand jury findings as “political gossip and hearsay.”

The governor stated his conversations with corrections officials only questioned how the release process worked after he learned Polston could leave prison early.

Stitt also said he never instructed officials to place Polston on GPS monitoring or release her from prison.

The controversy surrounding the Sara Polston release continues fueling debate across Oklahoma about sentencing laws, political influence, and victim protections.
