Proposal Would Phase Out Taxes on Primary Residences
A new ballot measure—State Question 841—has been filed and is now awaiting approval to begin collecting signatures. If passed by voters, the measure would phase out property taxes on homesteads, which are defined in Oklahoma law as a person’s primary residence.
The petition, filed November 21, is now under review by the Attorney General’s office, which must approve the petition language before supporters can begin collecting signatures statewide.
Other Property Types Would Still Be Taxed
Under the proposal, property taxes would continue to apply to:
Businesses
Rental properties
Second homes
Non-primary residences
The measure seeks to eliminate the homestead portion of property taxes entirely by 2029, shifting Oklahoma toward a structure where primary residences are exempt.
Supporters and Critics Preparing for Debate
Supporters argue the proposal would provide relief for homeowners struggling with rising property valuations. Critics warn that removing homestead-related revenue could impact funding for county government, schools, and public services.
Election officials have not yet set a timeline for when signature gathering may begin.
