Christopher and Kourtany Johnson of Pawnee County have been charged with first-degree murder and child neglect following the death of their one-year-old daughter. Authorities say the case highlights the dangers of drug misuse inside the home and the devastating consequences for children.

Methadone Exposure Reported

Christopher Johnson told investigators that the toddler may have spilled methadone on herself. Instead of seeking immediate medical care, he claims his wife resisted taking the child to the hospital, fearing their children would be taken away by authorities.

The parents put the child to bed, only to find her unresponsive the next morning.
