Owasso Couple Stranded as Category 5 Hurricane Hits Jamaica
An Owasso couple is stuck in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, bears down on the island. The Cerritos were vacationing when their return flights were canceled and the airport shut down due to the storm.
The couple says they feel safe inside their resort, which has backup power and supplies, but they are worried about what comes next.
Oklahomans Describe Calm Before the Storm
“The winds are strong, and the rain hasn’t stopped,” the couple shared in a message to family. “We’re safe for now, but we don’t know how long power and supplies will last.”
They expressed concern about the damage to infrastructure across Jamaica, including roads and communication lines. Officials on the island have warned of potential widespread flooding and power outages that could last for days.
Travel Delays Expected for Returning Tourists
Flights out of Jamaica have been suspended until further notice, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded, including several Oklahomans. Airlines are expected to resume service only after assessments confirm it’s safe to reopen the airports.
Back in Oklahoma, family members remain in contact through social media, monitoring updates from the National Hurricane Center. The Cerritos said they plan to return home as soon as conditions allow.
