OU Onward Scholarship Will Cover Tuition and Fees for More Oklahoma Students in 2027

The University of Oklahoma is expanding financial assistance for middle-income Oklahoma families with a new program designed to cover remaining undergraduate tuition and average mandatory fees after other aid is applied. Beginning in fall 2027, OU Onward will provide qualifying in-state students with up to $15,532 in guaranteed gap-filling assistance for the 2027-28 academic year.

The OU Onward scholarship targets Oklahoma households with adjusted gross incomes between $60,000 and $75,000, a group that can earn too much to qualify for some need-based programs while still facing significant college costs. The program will be available to eligible incoming freshmen, transfer students and current OU undergraduates pursuing their first bachelor's degree.

OU Onward Scholarship Targets Middle-Income Oklahoma Families

OU Onward is structured as a last-dollar scholarship, meaning it fills the remaining tuition and average-fee gap after a student's other scholarships and grants have been applied.

For the 2027-28 academic year, OU has set that guaranteed amount at $15,532.

According to the university's official OU Onward program information, qualifying students must come from households with an adjusted gross income between $60,000 and $75,000 and meet the program's Oklahoma residency and enrollment requirements.

The income range is important because OU Onward is intended to reach students who may fall outside some existing programs aimed at lower-income families.

One of those programs is Oklahoma's Promise, which provides tuition scholarships to qualifying Oklahoma students who meet income, academic and conduct requirements.

Students who qualify for Oklahoma's Promise are not eligible for OU Onward. Instead, OU Onward creates another financial aid pathway for students who meet its higher household-income range but do not qualify for Oklahoma's Promise.

The program does not provide a $15,532 cash payment on top of other scholarships.

Because it is last-dollar assistance, OU will calculate the student's qualifying tuition and average fees, subtract other applicable grants and scholarships, and use OU Onward to cover the remaining eligible amount up to the program's guarantee.

That structure is designed to prevent tuition and qualifying fees from becoming an additional out-of-pocket expense for eligible students while allowing existing scholarships and grants to be applied first.

Freshmen, Transfers and Current OU Students Can Qualify

OU Onward is broader than a scholarship restricted to first-time freshmen.

Eligible students can include incoming freshmen, transfer students and current OU undergraduates, provided they meet the program requirements.

Students must be Oklahoma residents, attend OU full time and be pursuing their first bachelor's degree.

The program does not cover graduate education or summer enrollment.

How long a student can receive OU Onward assistance depends on when that student enters the program.

Eligible freshmen can receive assistance for up to four years of undergraduate study, while qualifying transfer students and current OU students can receive the scholarship for a maximum of three years.

Students will also have to continue meeting OU's eligibility requirements to retain the assistance.

The university directs prospective students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, because financial aid information is necessary to determine eligibility and calculate the remaining amount OU Onward would cover.

Students can begin that process through the federal government's official FAFSA application and information portal.

The last-dollar design also means individual awards can differ.

A student receiving substantial federal or institutional grant aid may need a smaller OU Onward award to eliminate the remaining eligible tuition and fee balance. Another qualifying student receiving less outside assistance could receive a larger amount, up to the university's established guarantee.

New Program Fills Gap Between Existing College Aid Options

OU Onward adds another layer to a financial aid system that already includes federal grants, university scholarships and Oklahoma-specific programs.

Oklahoma's Promise remains one of the state's largest college-access programs. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education administer the program, which allows eligible students to begin preparing for the scholarship before graduating from high school.

OU Onward addresses a different group.

By establishing a household adjusted gross income range of $60,000 to $75,000, the university is specifically targeting families that may face substantial college expenses without qualifying for Oklahoma's Promise.

The distinction also makes the new program potentially relevant to families making college decisions well before the fall 2027 launch.

Because the scholarship applies to current students and transfers as well as new freshmen, its reach will not be limited to the incoming Class of 2031.

The $15,532 guarantee announced for 2027-28 is tied to that academic year's eligible tuition and average fees. Students should not assume the same dollar amount will automatically apply in subsequent academic years, although the program is designed to continue covering the qualifying gap for students who remain eligible.

Housing, food, books, transportation and other costs associated with attending college are also separate from the tuition-and-average-fee guarantee unless another form of financial aid covers them.

That distinction can be significant because tuition represents only one portion of the total cost of attending a residential university.

For qualifying families, however, the new program could remove a substantial part of that expense.
