OU Football Ticket Scams Prompt Warning Ahead of UTEP Season Opener
The University of Oklahoma is warning fans about OU football ticket scams ahead of Friday night’s season opener against UTEP at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman.
University officials say scammers are impersonating students, fans and others connected to OU in an effort to sell counterfeit tickets and steal personal information. Fans are being urged to purchase tickets only through authorized sources and never send photos of a student ID, driver’s license or other personal identification to an unverified seller.
The Sooners host the UTEP Miners at 7 p.m. Friday, September 4, with OU Athletics listing tickets starting at about $51.
OU Football Ticket Scams Use Stolen Identities to Target Fans
One of the most concerning tactics involves scammers using stolen identities to make fraudulent ticket offers appear legitimate.
Scammers can approach potential buyers through social media, online marketplaces and campus group chats, sometimes claiming to be OU students who can no longer attend the game.
OU Athletics specifically warns fans not to assume a seller is legitimate simply because that person provides a photo or message appearing to verify an identity.
In some cases, the scammer may send a photo of a student ID or other identification as supposed proof. The buyer can then be asked to provide their own identification in return.
That creates a second risk beyond losing money. A victim’s identification can potentially be used to impersonate that person when approaching another buyer.
OU’s warning is straightforward: do not send payment or personal information to an unverified ticket seller.
Fans with questions about a ticket or seller can contact the OU Athletics Ticket Office directly at 405-325-2424. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Digital Tickets Can Make Counterfeit Offers Difficult to Spot
OU has moved heavily toward mobile ticketing, creating another opportunity for scammers to use screenshots and other digital images to make fake offers look convincing.
OU says single-game football tickets are delivered digitally through the Oklahoma Sooners app, which provides fans access to their official ticket accounts.
Fans should be particularly cautious when a seller offers only a screenshot, image or other supposed proof of a ticket rather than completing a legitimate ticket transfer.
OU recommends that fans access their mobile tickets before arriving at the stadium and add them to their mobile wallet in advance. That also helps avoid problems caused by weak cellular or Wi-Fi service around the stadium on game day.
The university’s official football ticket information confirms that tickets for Friday’s OU-UTEP game were offered through the Athletics Ticket Office and delivered digitally.
OU Fans Urged to Buy Tickets Through Authorized Sellers
The safest option for fans is to stay within OU’s authorized ticket system.
The OU Athletics Ticket Office is the university’s primary authorized ticket outlet. SeatGeek is the official secondary resale provider for the Sooners.
Fans can access OU’s authorized resale option through SeatGeek ticketing from Oklahoma Athletics rather than responding to unsolicited offers from unknown sellers.
OU officials say anyone contacted by a seller who is not the Athletics Ticket Office or SeatGeek should not send payment or provide personal information until the offer has been independently verified.
The warning comes as thousands of fans prepare for the Sooners’ first football game of the 2026 season. Oklahoma hosts UTEP at 7 p.m. Friday in Norman before traveling to Michigan on September 12.
