Oklahoma Turnpike Authority audit finds no criminal wrongdoing
An investigative review into the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority audit has found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing tied to the agency’s finances or contracting practices.
The audit was conducted by State Auditor Cindy Byrd after a request from Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, who had raised concerns about financial transfers and contract management.
Oklahoma Turnpike Authority audit reviewed financial transfers
The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority audit examined transfers between the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, as well as contracting related to the agency’s $8.2 billion ACCESS program.
Officials said the investigation took an extended period because of the broad scope and detailed review required.
Oversight reports and audit information are maintained by the Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector’s Office.
Audit raises questions about agency authority
Although the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority audit did not uncover fraud or criminal activity, Byrd suggested the agency’s statutory authority may be too broad.
She recommended lawmakers consider reviewing and potentially tightening the board’s powers to improve oversight and accountability.
Legislative information and agency governance details are available through the Oklahoma Legislature.
Review began after concerns raised in 2023
The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority audit was launched after concerns surfaced around March 2023 regarding financial management and contracting practices.
While the investigation ultimately found no illegal conduct, officials emphasized the importance of a thorough review process before releasing the findings.
