Oklahoma State Goalpost Replacement Underway After Fans Tear It Down Following Oregon Upset
Oklahoma State is getting a new goalpost after celebrating fans tore down the old one following the Cowboys' stunning 39-31 upset of No. 6 Oregon at Boone Pickens Stadium.
The Oklahoma State goalpost replacement is expected to arrive Thursday and be installed Friday, according to OSU officials who spoke with News 9. That gives crews one day to spare before the Cowboys return to Boone Pickens Stadium to host Murray State at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The celebration followed one of Oklahoma State's biggest wins in years. The victory was OSU's first against an AP top-10 opponent since the final Bedlam game in 2023 and its first over an AP top-six team since beating No. 5 Notre Dame in January 2022.
Oklahoma State Goalpost Replacement Needed After Fans Rush Boone Pickens Stadium
The celebration started almost immediately after the final seconds disappeared from the clock Saturday.
OSU students told News 9 that fans began moving toward the field as the Cowboys closed out the victory. Within moments, students and other fans had poured onto the turf at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Freshman Kenzie Wagner described the atmosphere to News 9 as unlike anything she had previously experienced.
"The crowd — the energy was insane."
The official Oklahoma State recap of the Oregon upset also documented the postgame field storm after the Cowboys completed the eight-point victory.
Fans eventually brought down one of the stadium's goalposts and began carrying it through the crowd.
Their destination was Theta Pond, roughly a half-mile from Boone Pickens Stadium.
OSU sophomore Logan Grace told News 9 he could not get close enough to help bring the goalpost down but managed to touch it as fans carried it away. He later watched as the crowd threw the goalpost into the pond.
Exactly what happened to it afterward is less clear.
An OSU official told News 9 that fraternity members have been known to cut up goalposts and keep pieces as souvenirs following past celebrations, but News 9 was unable to confirm whether that happened this time.
Big 12 Will Not Fine Oklahoma State for Postgame Field Rush
Despite the size of the celebration, Oklahoma State will not be fined by the Big 12 for fans rushing the field, according to News 9.
OSU Associate Athletic Director for Communications Gavin Lang said stadium security, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers and other personnel worked to protect game officials, Oregon players and both sidelines as fans entered the field.
From the conference's perspective, Lang told News 9, Oklahoma State took the necessary steps to maintain safety during the celebration.
The field storm followed an extraordinary turnaround for the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State entered the game after finishing 1-11 last season and losing its 2026 opener to Tulsa. Oregon, meanwhile, had beaten OSU 69-3 in Eugene in 2025. Oklahoma State reversed that result Saturday by piling up 554 yards of offense compared with Oregon's 281.
The official Oklahoma State postgame notes show the win also snapped Oregon's 12-game road winning streak and its 22-game winning streak when scoring at least 30 points.
Saturday's celebration was also not Stillwater's first disappearing-goalpost moment. Fans previously tore down goalposts following major victories including the 2011 Big 12 championship and the 2023 Bedlam win over Oklahoma, according to News 9.
New Oklahoma State Goalpost Expected Before Murray State Game
The immediate challenge for OSU is making sure Boone Pickens Stadium is ready for another football game.
Lang told News 9 the replacement goalpost is scheduled to arrive Thursday and be installed Friday.
The Cowboys then host Murray State at 6 p.m. Saturday, September 19, as Oklahoma State attempts to build on the momentum from its upset of Oregon. The Oklahoma State football schedule confirms Saturday's game at Boone Pickens Stadium before the Cowboys travel to West Virginia the following week.
For students, the win has already changed the atmosphere around a program coming off a one-win season.
Grace told News 9 there is now "a lot more hope" surrounding the Cowboys after beating one of the nation's highest-ranked teams.
That optimism comes after a performance in which quarterback Drew Mestemaker accounted for 426 total yards, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards and a touchdown. OSU's defense also held Oregon to 281 total yards.
The victory gave first-year Oklahoma State coach Eric Morris his first win with the Cowboys and extended OSU's home-opening winning streak to 31 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the FBS.
Now, the evidence of Saturday's celebration is somewhere beyond its usual spot in the Boone Pickens Stadium end zone.
The Oklahoma State goalpost replacement should be standing before Saturday night's kickoff against Murray State. After what happened following the Oregon upset, OSU fans have already demonstrated that a goalpost's location after the final whistle is another matter entirely.
