Oklahoma Education Department Explains New Open Records Process
Education Officials Stress Transparency
The Oklahoma State Department of Education is detailing a new process for requesting Open Records, saying it marks a shift toward greater government transparency. Attorney Jackie Phelps described the change as part of a broader effort to rebuild public trust.
“It’s a new day at the education department,” Phelps said.
Unknown Number of Backlogged Requests
Officials confirmed that it remains unclear how many Open Records requests remain unanswered from the previous administration. The department says auditing older requests is ongoing.
New Requests Routed Through Awareity
Education officials are now encouraging the public to file requests using the Awareity reporting platform, which allows parents, educators, and citizens to submit:
Open Records requests
Complaints
Safety concerns
Misconduct reports
Officials say centralizing submissions will improve response tracking and accountability.
Parents Encouraged to Participate
Education leaders emphasize that public engagement is a key component of transparency and encourage citizens to use the system responsibly to improve school accountability statewide.
