Oklahoma Spaceport Helped Launch Boeing 737 MAX 10 Certification
An Oklahoma spaceport played a key role in one of Boeing's most significant commercial aviation programs, providing the infrastructure that helped launch the certification campaign for the Boeing 737 MAX 10.
The facility, now known as Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport in Burns Flat, hosted an 18-day flight testing campaign during the early stages of the aircraft's certification process. Operated by the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA), the site offered one of the nation's longest civilian runways, expansive aircraft staging areas and uncongested airspace that allowed Boeing engineers to conduct specialized testing before the program ultimately completed its certification flight campaign.
Oklahoma Spaceport Provided Ideal Testing Environment
Formerly known as the Clinton-Sherman Industrial Airpark, Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport has long been recognized for its unique aviation infrastructure.
Located in Burns Flat, the facility features a 13,503-foot concrete runway, making it one of the longest civilian-use runways in the United States.
The site also includes a 96-acre concrete apron, giving Boeing ample room to stage aircraft, heavy ground support equipment and fueling operations during the testing program.
Perhaps just as important, western Oklahoma's relatively uncongested airspace allowed test pilots to repeatedly perform specialized takeoff, landing and braking maneuvers without the delays often encountered around larger commercial airports.
Those advantages made the Oklahoma facility an important early testing location as Boeing worked toward federal certification of its largest 737 MAX model.
Boeing 737 MAX 10 Program Reaches Major Milestone
The testing campaign conducted in Oklahoma became part of a much larger certification effort spanning several years.
According to Boeing, the 737 MAX 10 development fleet ultimately completed 976 test flights, accumulating more than 2,060 flight hours along with approximately 1,040 hours of ground testing.
Engineers evaluated numerous aircraft systems throughout the program, including the landing gear, wet runway braking performance, maximum-energy stopping capability, an enhanced angle-of-attack system and an updated engine anti-ice system.
The final certification flight, conducted in Washington state, focused on cabin systems including passenger announcements, smoke detector audibility and onboard electronic equipment.
The company is now completing final system safety reviews as part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification process before customer deliveries begin.
Oklahoma Continues Building Aerospace Reputation
The successful testing campaign highlights Oklahoma's growing role in the nation's aerospace industry.
Facilities like Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport continue attracting aviation, aerospace and defense projects because of the state's available airspace, extensive runway infrastructure and experienced workforce.
State leaders have increasingly promoted Oklahoma as a destination for advanced aviation research, aircraft testing and future commercial space operations, with OSIDA continuing to market the Burns Flat facility for both aerospace and emerging space industry development.
While the Boeing 737 MAX 10 moves closer to final regulatory approval, the testing completed in western Oklahoma represents another example of how the state's aerospace infrastructure continues contributing to nationally significant aviation programs and reinforcing Oklahoma's reputation as an important hub for aerospace innovation.
