Oklahoma Moves Forward With Spaceplane Hangar at Burns Flat
Oklahoma’s push to join the nation’s expanding space industry took a leap forward this week. The Aerospace and Aeronautics Commission has officially approved construction of a new specialized hangar to house the Dawn Aerospace Aurora Spaceplane.
First Spacecraft Expected to Launch From Oklahoma
The Aurora vehicle—already paid for under the state’s aerospace investment plan—will be based at the Oklahoma Spaceport in Burns Flat, one of the nation’s few FAA-licensed spaceflight facilities. The project is viewed as a critical step toward achieving suborbital launches from Oklahoma.
Economic and Technological Boost
The hangar and operational support facility represent progress toward attracting aerospace companies, research partners, and new high-tech jobs to western Oklahoma.
Officials say that if all goes well, the Aurora could eventually become the first spaceplane to take off from Oklahoma soil.
