Oklahoma Senate Advances Public Safety Bill on Crime Scene Images

The Oklahoma public safety bill crime scene images proposal is moving forward after approval by the Oklahoma Senate Public Safety Committee.

Senate Bill 1479, authored by Senator Jack Stewart, would make it a crime for first responders or support staff to publicly release images from accident or crime scenes.

Oklahoma public safety bill shaped by past tragedies

Stewart cited the 2020 helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter as an example of why such protections are needed.

The bill was requested by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Media protections emphasized

Stewart stressed the legislation would not apply to news media or the public, focusing instead on misuse by those responding to emergencies.

The bill’s title was stricken to allow further amendments before consideration by the full Senate.

Next steps in the legislative process

Lawmakers are expected to revisit the measure as it moves toward the Senate floor.
