Oklahoma Road Conditions Remain Hazardous Despite Clearing Skies
Oklahoma road conditions remain dangerous even as snowfall has ended and sunshine has returned across much of the state.
Transportation officials warn that many highways, city streets, and rural roads are still snow-packed and icy, creating hazardous driving conditions. The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA)Â urges motorists to remain cautious, noting that improved visibility does not mean improved traction.
Officials say slick spots are especially common on bridges and overpasses, which freeze faster than surrounding roadways due to air circulation underneath.
Oklahoma road conditions require extra caution
The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority recommends allowing extra travel time, reducing speeds, and increasing following distances. Drivers are urged to remain at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment, giving crews space to operate safely and preventing snow or debris from striking vehicles.
OTA officials also stress the importance of maintaining extra space between vehicles to allow adequate braking distance, particularly on untreated surfaces. Even four-wheel-drive vehicles are not immune to sliding on ice.
Officials warn hazards may persist
According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, shaded roadways and low-traffic areas may remain icy throughout the day, even with above-freezing temperatures.
Emergency officials say many winter crashes occur after storms, when drivers underestimate lingering hazards. Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling and avoid unnecessary trips when possible.
