Oklahoma Road Conditions Improve but Ice Still Lingers in Neighborhoods

Oklahoma road conditions are improving compared to earlier this week, but officials warn drivers not to let their guard down.

Transportation officials say major highways are largely clear, offering relief after several days of winter weather. However, neighborhood streets and secondary roads remain snow-packed and icy in many areas due to overnight freezing temperatures.

Oklahoma road conditions remain hazardous in shaded areas

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) warns that black ice remains a major concern, especially on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways. Even roads that appear dry can conceal thin layers of ice capable of causing sudden loss of control.

Officials urge drivers to reduce speeds, increase following distance, and avoid abrupt braking or steering.

Drive Oklahoma app provides real-time updates

Motorists are encouraged to use the Drive Oklahoma app, which provides real-time road condition updates, traffic alerts, and camera views from across the state. ODOT says the app is one of the most reliable ways to assess travel conditions before heading out.

Safety officials emphasize that many winter crashes occur during periods of improvement, when drivers assume conditions are safer than they actually are.
