Oklahoma Prison Contraband Seizures Top $18.5 Million in One Year
The scale of Oklahoma prison contraband uncovered inside state correctional facilities is drawing renewed attention after officials revealed inmates possessed an estimated $18.5 million worth of illegal items last year.
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections reports the haul included massive quantities of drugs, cell phones, weapons, and other prohibited materials.
Oklahoma Prison Contraband Includes Drugs and Weapons
According to DOC data, seizures included 48 pounds of methamphetamine, 261 pounds of marijuana, 50 pounds of THC wax, and seven pounds of fentanyl. Authorities also confiscated tobacco, hundreds of cell phones, and improvised weapons capable of serious harm.
Officials say drones, visitors, and corrupt associates remain common sources of contraband, despite enhanced security measures. In total, 83 people were arrested for smuggling items into facilities.
DOC Expands Enforcement Efforts
The discovery of such extensive Oklahoma prison contraband underscores ongoing challenges in keeping correctional facilities secure. DOC officials say the presence of drugs and phones fuels violence, extortion, and organized criminal activity behind bars.
The agency has expanded the use of drone detection systems, intelligence gathering, and coordinated investigations with state and federal law enforcement partners. Officials emphasize that preventing contraband protects both inmates and staff.
The DOC continues to work with prosecutors to pursue charges against those involved in smuggling operations.
