Amarillo Murder Leads to 60-Year Sentence
A 33-year-old Oklahoma man, Mario Rodriguez, will spend 60 years in a Texas prison for killing his girlfriend, Marisela Mendoza, in Amarillo.
Authorities said Rodriguez shot Mendoza in a restaurant parking lot after an argument on April 6. His two children, ages 5 and 7, sat in his car during the shooting.
Deadly Argument in Amarillo Parking Lot
Investigators said the couple drove separately to Amarillo after a disagreement earlier that day. They met in a parking lot where the argument escalated. Witnesses called police after hearing several gunshots. Officers arrested Rodriguez at the scene without incident.
Prosecutors said the evidence clearly showed Rodriguez brought the gun with him and intended to use it. He later admitted to the shooting in court.
Justice for Marisela Mendoza
The court sentenced Rodriguez to 60 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
Mendoza’s family told reporters they are “heartbroken but grateful for justice.”
The children were unharmed and are now living with relatives in Oklahoma. Prosecutors said the sentence sends a strong message about domestic violence and the toll it takes on families.
