Oklahoma Foster Homes Initiative Launches “A Home for Every Child”

Oklahoma is the first state selected to participate in a new national initiative aimed at expanding the number of Oklahoma foster homes and strengthening support systems for vulnerable children and families.

Governor Kevin Stitt announced the state’s involvement in “A Home for Every Child,” a program focused on increasing safe, supportive foster placements while also working to reduce the overall number of children entering foster care.

Oklahoma Foster Homes Expansion Through National Initiative

The Oklahoma foster homes initiative centers on recruitment, retention, and family stabilization efforts. State leaders say the goal is not only to grow the number of qualified foster families but also to provide services that help biological families stay together whenever possible.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, thousands of children currently rely on foster placements across the state. Officials say additional foster homes are urgently needed, particularly in rural communities and for sibling groups.

National child welfare data tracked by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows states that invest in prevention services and kinship care often reduce long-term foster care placements.

Preventing Foster Care Entries

“A Home for Every Child” also emphasizes early intervention. Supporters say providing services before a crisis can prevent children from entering state custody in the first place.

Research published by the Child Welfare Information Gateway highlights how family preservation services, mental health access, and substance abuse treatment programs can stabilize homes and reduce removals.

State officials say expanding Oklahoma foster homes must be paired with prevention strategies to achieve lasting change.

Officials say increasing awareness and community involvement is key to meeting the program’s long-term goals.
