Oklahoma Fires Offensive Coordinator Ben Arbuckle Following South Carolina Loss

Oklahoma has fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle following a 42-25 home loss to South Carolina, marking a significant coaching change as the Sooners struggle through their second season in the Southeastern Conference. Head coach Brent Venables made the decision Monday, November 2, after another disappointing offensive performance dropped Oklahoma to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in SEC play.

The move comes amid growing frustration with an Oklahoma offense that ranks outside the nation's top 100 in several statistical categories. Against South Carolina, the Sooners managed fewer than 80 total yards during the first half, continuing a pattern of offensive inconsistency that has contributed to consecutive home losses against Kentucky and South Carolina. With four regular-season games remaining, Oklahoma faces mounting pressure to improve its production and secure bowl eligibility.

Oklahoma Fires Offensive Coordinator After Another Struggling Performance

Arbuckle's dismissal follows a difficult stretch for an Oklahoma offense that has struggled to establish consistency against SEC opponents. Saturday's loss to South Carolina exposed many of the problems that have affected the Sooners throughout the season, including limited first-half production and difficulty sustaining scoring drives.

The Sooners entered halftime having generated fewer than 80 yards of total offense, leaving the defense facing additional pressure against a South Carolina team that capitalized on Oklahoma's struggles.

According to OU Daily's November 2 report on Arbuckle's dismissal, the coaching change follows a series of disappointing performances that have raised questions about the direction of Oklahoma's offense under Venables.

Arbuckle was brought to Oklahoma with a reputation for developing productive passing attacks and innovative offensive schemes. His previous coaching experience included serving as offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky and Washington State, where his offenses attracted national attention.

However, that success did not translate into the consistent production Oklahoma expected in SEC competition. The Sooners have struggled to establish an effective offensive rhythm, particularly against conference opponents capable of generating pressure and limiting explosive plays.

The decision to remove Arbuckle during the regular season signals the urgency surrounding Oklahoma's remaining schedule and the need for immediate improvement.

Brent Venables Faces Another Offensive Staff Transition

The dismissal places Venables in the position of reorganizing Oklahoma's offensive leadership with several important SEC games remaining. Arbuckle became Oklahoma's offensive coordinator in December 2024 after successful coaching stops at Western Kentucky and Washington State.

He was hired to improve an offense that had struggled with consistency during the previous season. However, the Sooners have continued experiencing difficulties moving the football against conference opponents.

Oklahoma's offensive struggles were especially apparent against South Carolina. The Sooners trailed 28-10 at halftime, and their only first-half touchdown came on a 30-yard interception return by linebacker Kip Lewis.

According to Oklahoma Athletics' official game recap, Oklahoma finished with 359 total yards, but 241 of those yards came during the fourth quarter, when the Gamecocks had already established a commanding lead.

Quarterback John Mateer completed 26 of 43 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns, both to wide receiver Ivan Carreon. Despite that late production, Oklahoma never seriously threatened South Carolina's advantage during the final period.

The coaching change also continues a pattern of offensive staff turnover under Venables. Oklahoma previously dismissed offensive coordinator Seth Littrell during the 2024 season, also following a loss to South Carolina.

The Sooners must now determine who will handle offensive play-calling responsibilities as the program attempts to stabilize its performance.

Oklahoma Sooners Prepare for Critical SEC Road Game Against Florida

Oklahoma's next challenge comes Saturday, November 7, when the Sooners travel to Gainesville to face the Florida Gators. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Central Time on SEC Network.

The matchup carries significant importance for Oklahoma's postseason outlook. At 4-4, the Sooners need at least two victories over their final four regular-season games to reach the traditional six-win threshold for bowl eligibility.

Florida presents another difficult SEC opponent, and the Sooners will have limited preparation time to adjust their offensive approach following Arbuckle's departure.

According to On3's reporting on Oklahoma's offensive coordinator change, the decision reflects the program's effort to address persistent offensive problems before the season's final stretch.

Despite the coaching disruption, Oklahoma continues to pursue future talent. The Sooners recently received a commitment from Logan Lokey, a four-star defensive lineman in the 2028 recruiting class from Denton Guyer High School in Texas.

The recruiting development provides a positive note for the program, although Oklahoma's immediate attention remains on improving its offensive execution and preparing for Florida.

Arbuckle's dismissal marks a significant midseason decision for Brent Venables, who must now find a way to revive Oklahoma's struggling offense while keeping the Sooners' postseason hopes alive. With four games remaining, the response against Florida will provide an early indication of whether the coaching change can produce immediate results.
