An Oklahoma City church fire has left a long-standing congregation shaken after vandals broke into Windwood Freewill Baptist Church and caused extensive damage just hours before Sunday services were set to begin.

Pastor Tom Drake arrived early Sunday morning and immediately knew something was wrong. Inside the sanctuary, walls were spray-painted with graffiti, windows had been smashed, and several wooden pews were intentionally set on fire. Fire crews were able to contain the blaze before it spread further, but smoke and water damage impacted much of the worship space.

Oklahoma City Church Fire Discovered Hours Before Services

The timing of the Oklahoma City church fire made the incident especially painful for church members. Congregants were already preparing for worship, outreach activities, and community programs when the vandalism was discovered. No injuries were reported, but services were canceled as cleanup began.

Church Serves as Community Hub and Voting Site

Windwood Freewill Baptist Church has long been a trusted presence in the neighborhood. Beyond worship services, the church has assisted families displaced by tornadoes, hosted food drives, and served as an official voting precinct during elections. Members say the attack feels personal because of the church’s role in helping others.

Oklahoma City police are investigating the incident as arson and vandalism. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.
