Oklahoma Cattle Prices Rise for Calves as El Reno Auction Reports Strong Demand

Oklahoma cattle prices showed continued strength for calves at the latest OKC West Livestock Auction in El Reno, where federal market reporters documented higher prices and strong buyer demand. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's October 14 report covered the October 13 sale and recorded 5,066 head of feeder cattle, compared with 4,598 in the previous reported sale. The findings were highlighted in a new Oklahoma Farm Report market update Thursday, October 15.

The market report indicated that steer calves sold $5 to $15 higher, while heifer calves gained $10 to $20 compared with the previous week. Feeder steer prices were generally unevenly steady, although heavier steers weighing 900 to 1,000 pounds brought additional gains. Buyers also showed optimism about improving wheat pasture conditions following substantial rainfall across the region.

Oklahoma Cattle Prices Reflect Strong Calf Demand

The USDA's official October 14 livestock market report described overall demand as good and calf demand as very good.

Feeder steers weighing 900 to 1,000 pounds sold approximately $5 to $7 higher than the previous week.

Feeder heifers were generally unevenly steady, reflecting differences in weight, quality and buyer preferences.

The reported offering included approximately 63% steers, 33% heifers and 4% bulls.

About 71% of the feeder cattle weighed more than 600 pounds.

Recent Rainfall Improves Wheat Pasture Outlook

The market report specifically noted that visible green wheat had improved optimism among buyers and agricultural producers.

Recent rainfall also helped replenish ponds that had remained dry during prolonged drought conditions.

Those developments are significant for cattle operations that rely on wheat pasture for fall and winter grazing.

However, the effects of the rainfall will vary by location, particularly where excessive moisture caused flooding or field damage.

The Oklahoma Farm Report's October 15 market update provides producers with the latest summary of trading conditions at the El Reno facility.

El Reno Auction Remains Important Regional Market

OKC West operates livestock auctions serving cattle producers throughout central and western Oklahoma.

Its official livestock sale schedule includes separate sales for cows and bulls, calves and stockers, and feeder cattle.

The latest USDA report recorded fewer cattle than the 6,171 head reported during the comparable sale a year earlier.

Price comparisons vary by cattle class, weight and quality, so individual transactions may differ considerably from the overall market trends.

For Oklahoma ranchers evaluating fall marketing decisions, the latest report provides updated information about calf demand, feeder cattle prices and changing pasture conditions.
