An Oklahoma aerospace industry merger is drawing attention at the Capitol as lawmakers examine the impact of combining two key state agencies ahead of the upcoming legislative session.

During a pre-session House hearing, lawmakers heard testimony on the proposed merger of the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority with the Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics. Supporters say the move is designed to streamline operations and strengthen Oklahoma’s position in aviation and space technology.

Grayson Ardies, executive director of the Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics, told House members the merger is about more than making Oklahoma a testing hub for unmanned aircraft systems.

Oklahoma aerospace industry merger tied to economic growth

Ardies emphasized that the Oklahoma aerospace industry merger supports long-term economic development, calling aviation and aerospace the state’s second-largest industry sector. He noted Oklahoma’s role in aircraft maintenance, manufacturing, and emerging drone technology continues to expand.

According to data from the Federal Aviation Administration, Oklahoma consistently ranks among the top states for aerospace employment and infrastructure. Ardies said integrating new technologies, particularly in unmanned aircraft systems, strengthens Oklahoma’s competitive advantage.

Lawmakers weigh future of aviation policy

House members questioned how the merger could affect regulatory oversight, workforce development, and federal partnerships. Ardies detailed Oklahoma’s progress in the national “space race” and said the merger allows for better alignment with federal aviation initiatives.

Supporters say the consolidation could reduce duplication while enhancing Oklahoma’s national profile in aerospace innovation.
