Utility Companies Gain New Funding Option

A new Oklahoma law now allows utility companies to begin collecting construction costs from customers while new power plants are still being built.

OG&E Requests Rate Increase

OG&E quickly took advantage of the change, filing for a $100 million rate increase to help fund two new gas-fired power plants.During hearings before the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, attorneys questioned the true costs and benefits of the proposal.

Legal Challenges and Opposition

Thomas Schroedter, attorney for the Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma, pressed Attorney General expert Todd Bohrmann on cost projections. Bohrmann confirmed the projects’ price tags could climb higher than expected.

Although a proposed settlement has been filed, major opponents have rejected the deal, setting up additional hearings in the weeks ahead.

If approved, the rate increase would impact residential customers statewide and could set a precedent for future cost-recovery measures under the new law.
