Coffey Joins Crowded Field
Another contender has entered Oklahoma’s attorney general race. Former federal prosecutor Nick Coffey announced his campaign this week, joining Jon Echols and Jeff Starling in the race to replace current Attorney General Gentner Drummond, who is not seeking reelection.
Coffey graduated from the University of Oklahoma and practiced law at McAfee & Taft before serving as a federal prosecutor. He said his background in law enforcement and courtroom experience uniquely qualify him to serve as Oklahoma’s chief legal officer.
“I’ve spent my career upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens from corruption and crime,” Coffey said in a written statement.
The race is expected to draw statewide attention as candidates begin shaping their campaigns on law-and-order issues and government transparency.
Race Already Competitive
House Majority Leader Jon Echols, R-Oklahoma City, announced earlier this month that he would run on a platform focused on accountability and criminal-justice reform. Jeff Starling, a longtime Tulsa attorney, declared his candidacy soon after, emphasizing experience in both civil and criminal law.
Coffey’s entrance adds another layer of competition for a position that oversees everything from state investigations to consumer-protection enforcement.
Looking Ahead
Political observers say the field could expand before the filing deadline. The attorney general’s race is considered one of the most consequential on the 2026 ballot, given ongoing debates over tribal compacts, federal lawsuits, and state sovereignty.
