New World Screwworm Outbreak Triggers Oklahoma Livestock Restrictions
A growing New World screwworm outbreak in Texas has prompted Oklahoma agriculture officials to implement emergency livestock restrictions as federal and state agencies work to prevent the devastating parasite from spreading north.
The outbreak marks the first confirmed appearance of the New World screwworm in the United States since 1966, raising concerns throughout the cattle industry and among livestock producers across Oklahoma.
While no cases have been detected in Oklahoma, state officials are taking precautionary steps to protect the state's livestock industry from what experts describe as a potentially catastrophic agricultural threat.
The parasite has already been confirmed in multiple calves in south Texas, triggering quarantine zones, transportation restrictions, and an aggressive federal response.
New World Screwworm Outbreak Expands Into Texas
The current New World screwworm outbreak began drawing national attention after Mexican animal health officials confirmed a case near the U.S. border in late May.
The situation escalated on June 3 when the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first domestic case in nearly 60 years.
The infected animal was identified as a three-week-old beef calf in Zavala County, Texas.
Just two days later, officials confirmed a second infected calf less than six miles from the original detection site.
The discoveries triggered an immediate response from federal and state animal health agencies concerned about preventing further spread.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, containment efforts are now focused on preventing the parasite from establishing a permanent presence in the United States.
Parasite Poses Major Threat To Livestock Industry
Unlike many common livestock pests, the New World screwworm outbreak involves a parasite that feeds on living tissue rather than dead or decaying flesh.
Adult female flies lay eggs in open wounds, including small cuts, tick bites, branding marks, or the healing navels of newborn calves.
Once hatched, the larvae burrow into living tissue and continue feeding as the wound grows larger.
If left untreated, infestations can lead to severe infections, permanent injury, and death.
Agriculture officials warn that widespread infestation could create significant economic losses for cattle producers, ranchers, and livestock operations throughout the country.
According to the Texas Animal Health Commission, the parasite historically caused massive losses to the livestock industry before it was eradicated from the United States decades ago.
Oklahoma Implements Emergency Livestock Rules
In response to the New World screwworm outbreak, the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry has enacted emergency restrictions on livestock entering the state.
Officials now require animals arriving from Texas to be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection verifying they did not originate from or travel through the affected quarantine zone.
Animals coming directly from the restricted area must receive additional approval from the Oklahoma State Veterinarian and undergo individual inspections before entering Oklahoma.
Federal officials have also established a 20-kilometer quarantine zone around the Texas outbreak area and launched a large-scale sterile fly release program designed to disrupt reproduction of the pest.
The response includes aerial and ground releases of approximately four million sterile flies each week.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, there are currently no confirmed cases in Oklahoma, and officials emphasize that the food supply remains safe because the parasite affects living animals and does not contaminate processed meat products.
Agriculture leaders are urging Oklahoma producers to remain vigilant, inspect animals regularly, and report any suspicious wounds or infestations immediately as containment efforts continue across the region.
