A new state law that takes effect November 1 would impose tougher sentences of child sex crimes including the death penalty. The Governor signed Senate Bill 5-99 into law. A conviction for of lewd acts with a child under fourteen provides for a sentencing of death or life without parole. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled years ago, the death penalty for such a crime was unconstitutional.
