BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Broken Arrow will soon have the chance to live with greater independence thanks to a new housing project by the Gatesway Foundation.
The non-profit organization announced that it is building brand-new residential cottages for its clients, offering safe, supportive housing designed to promote self-reliance while still providing necessary assistance.
For Gatesway client Kelsi Poggenpohl, the move into one of the cottages represents more than just a new address.
“I’m looking forward to having my own space,” Poggenpohl said. “It’s going to help me feel more independent.”
About the Project
Location: Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
Purpose: To give adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) a safe, community-oriented living environment
Completion Date: November 2025
Features: Individual living spaces, shared community areas, accessibility accommodations, and on-site support staff
Why It Matters
The Gatesway Foundation has served Oklahomans with disabilities for decades, providing housing, job training, and support services. This latest project reflects a growing movement toward community-based living options for adults with IDD — moving away from institutional settings and toward integrated, independent lifestyles.
Housing advocates say developments like this can:
Improve quality of life
Increase community involvement
Support personal growth and confidence
Encourage independence while maintaining safety
When Residents Can Move In
The cottages are expected to be completed and ready for residents by November 2025. Applications and placement decisions will be coordinated through the Gatesway Foundation.
