Mayor David Holt To Outline Oklahoma City's Future During State Of The City Address

Mayor David Holt State of the City address is expected to focus on Oklahoma City's record population growth, major construction projects and preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games as city leaders map out the next chapter of Oklahoma City's development.

Holt is scheduled to deliver his annual Mayor David Holt State of the City address at 11:30 a.m. Today, highlighting how Oklahoma City plans to build on decades of growth through continued investment in infrastructure, sports venues and quality-of-life projects. Among the milestones expected to be featured are the city's population surpassing 700,000 residents, construction of a new downtown arena and Oklahoma City's role as a co-host of the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Mayor David Holt State Of The City Will Highlight Historic Growth

One of the biggest announcements expected during Holt's address is Oklahoma City's continued population growth, with the city now home to more than 700,000 residents.

Holt is expected to discuss how the voter-approved MAPS program continues to shape Oklahoma City's future by funding transportation improvements, public spaces and major infrastructure projects needed to support the city's expanding population.

Construction is also underway on the city's nearly $1 billion downtown arena, which is expected to open in 2028 ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2028-29 NBA season. Work also continues on the new $120 million multipurpose stadium, which will host professional soccer, football and entertainment events.

Olympics Continue To Shape Oklahoma City's Future

Holt is also expected to discuss Oklahoma City's growing role on the international stage as an official co-host of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.

Under an agreement between Oklahoma City and Los Angeles, Devon Park will host Olympic softball competition while RIVERSPORT Adventures will host canoe slalom events.

The city will take another step toward those Games later this month by hosting the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, welcoming more than 300 athletes representing approximately 50 countries. City leaders have described the event as an important opportunity to test operations ahead of the Olympics.

Volunteers Needed As Olympic Planning Continues

As preparations continue, Holt is expected to announce that applications for Team OKC volunteers will open next week.

Officials are seeking community volunteers willing to serve ten eight-hour shifts during the 2028 Olympic Games as Oklahoma City prepares to welcome an estimated 200,000 visitors from around the world.

The volunteer effort is expected to become one of the city's largest community engagement initiatives leading up to the Games while showcasing Oklahoma City's hospitality on an international stage.
