Trump Taps Markwayne Mullin for DHS Role
Oklahoma U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin has been tapped by President Donald Trump to become the next Secretary of Homeland Security, a major cabinet-level position overseeing border security, immigration enforcement, disaster response, and national security operations.
Trump announced the nomination on March 5, saying Mullin would take over the role effective March 31. The appointment now moves to the Senate confirmation process, which will determine whether Mullin is officially installed as head of the Department of Homeland Security.
Mullin Replaces Kristi Noem
Mullin would replace Kristi Noem, who was removed from the post following intense bipartisan criticism during recent congressional hearings. Reports indicate Noem has been reassigned to a new position as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a Western Hemisphere security initiative.
The change places Mullin at the center of one of the federal government’s most visible and politically charged agencies. The Department of Homeland Security remains heavily involved in ongoing debates over border enforcement, immigration policy, and national preparedness.
Mullin Calls Nomination “Humbling”
Mullin reacted warmly to the news, telling reporters, “Little kid from west Oklahoma gets to serve in the president's cabinet. That’s pretty neat”.
He also described the opportunity as “humbling” and said he was “super excited” to begin the work of securing the homeland.
What Happens Next for Oklahoma
Before taking office permanently, Mullin must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Under federal vacancy laws, he could potentially serve in an acting capacity while that process plays out, depending on legal requirements.
If Mullin resigns his Senate seat, Governor Kevin Stitt would have 30 days to appoint a replacement to represent Oklahoma in the U.S. Senate.
