Lawton Discovery Day October 14: Free Fall Break Family Activities
Lawton Discovery Day Brings Free Hands-On Fall Break Fun to Families October 14
Families looking for something exciting and educational to do during fall break can explore the people, vehicles and technology that keep Lawton running at the city's inaugural Lawton Discovery Day. The free community event takes place Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Lawton Farmers Market, 77 Southwest 4th Street.
The Lawton Discovery Day event will transform the farmers market into an interactive learning experience featuring emergency vehicles, city equipment, science activities and opportunities to meet local public service professionals. Children can climb aboard vehicles, participate in hands-on demonstrations and collect passport stamps for a chance to win a 2027 Lawton Aquatic Center family season pass.
Lawton Discovery Day Offers Fire Trucks, Police Cars and City Vehicles
Instead of a traditional information fair, Discovery Day invites children and adults to explore city services through firsthand experiences.
Outside the farmers market, families can get an up-close look at fire engines, police vehicles, ambulances, solid waste trucks and a Lawton Area Transit System (LATS) bus.
Visitors will have opportunities to meet the employees who operate these vehicles and learn how their work supports public safety, transportation and everyday city operations.
The experience offers children a chance to discover careers in emergency response, public transportation and municipal services while seeing equipment they normally encounter only from a distance.
Hands-On STEM Activities Bring Science and Public Safety Together
Inside the farmers market, FISTA will participate in interactive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities designed to encourage curiosity and exploration.
Families can also learn about stormwater management, air quality and emergency preparedness, connecting scientific concepts with issues that directly affect the Lawton community.
The Lawton Animal Welfare adoption trailer will also be featured, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about local animal welfare services and pet adoption.
Together, the activities introduce children to the science, technology and community planning involved in keeping a city safe and functioning.
The City of Lawton has partnered with the Lawton Farmers Market to organize the event, with additional participation from Kirk's EMS, Memorial Health EMS, Our Blood Institute, LATS and Comanche County-Lawton Emergency Management.
