Legislative Study Focuses on State Park Fees

Oklahoma lawmakers are examining ways to reduce or eliminate entrance fees at state parks — a move that could change how Oklahomans access their favorite outdoor destinations. During an interim legislative study, Tourism Director Sterling Zearley told lawmakers the fees remain necessary because his department faces deep budget cuts and a mounting maintenance backlog.

He explained that Oklahoma’s park system carries a significant list of deferred infrastructure projects, many of which impact water, roads, and recreational facilities.

STATE PARKS
“We’ve looked everywhere for savings,” Zearley said. “But we can’t keep parks open or safe without funding.”

Health Connection May Offer New Funding Path

Zearley proposed a creative solution — connecting state park recreation with public health goals. He suggested that the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), which funds programs promoting healthier lifestyles, might help offset or replace the fees.

Being outdoors, hiking, and camping all contribute to physical and mental well-being, he noted.Lawmakers agreed to explore the possibility and plan future meetings to discuss whether TSET could help fund park maintenance, reducing the need for entrance fees altogether.

The study continues as state officials look for new ways to preserve Oklahoma’s natural resources while keeping access affordable for families.
