Lawmaker Says Governor Has Damaged Oklahoma Tribal Relations

A Republican lawmaker says Oklahoma tribal relations have been severely damaged under Governor Kevin Stitt’s leadership.

State Representative Scott Fetgatter, who serves on the House Tribal and External Affairs Committee, accused the governor of undermining decades of cooperation between the state and Oklahoma’s Native American tribes.

Criticism centers on tribal collaboration

Fetgatter said the governor had opportunities to repair strained relationships with tribes but instead deepened divisions through policy decisions and public rhetoric.

Oklahoma is home to 39 federally recognized tribes, which collectively contribute billions of dollars annually to the state economy, according to the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission.

Concerns over long-term impact

Fetgatter warned that damaged relationships could affect economic development, public safety agreements, and joint programs between the state and tribal governments.

Tribal leaders have repeatedly emphasized the importance of cooperation in areas such as law enforcement, healthcare, infrastructure, and education.

Call for new leadership approach

Fetgatter said he hopes Oklahoma’s next governor will embrace collaboration and respect tribal sovereignty, restoring trust between state and tribal governments.
