Kevin Hern Senate Race Begins
Oklahoma Congressman Kevin Hern has announced he will run in the Kevin Hern Senate race for the seat currently held by U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin.
Hern becomes the first major candidate to officially enter the race as political changes unfold in Washington.
The seat could soon become vacant after President Donald Trump selected Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace Kristi Noem as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Kevin Hern Senate Race Follows Cabinet Nomination
The Kevin Hern Senate race comes as Mullin prepares to leave the Senate if his nomination is confirmed.
According to the U.S. Senate, Mullin must still be confirmed before taking over the leadership role at the Department of Homeland Security.
If confirmed, Mullin is expected to begin the position around March 31.
Governor Will Appoint Temporary Replacement
Under Oklahoma law, Governor Kevin Stitt will appoint an interim replacement if Mullin resigns from the Senate.
However, the temporary appointee selected by the Governor of Oklahoma cannot run in the special election to fill the remainder of Mullin’s term.
Officials say the filing period for the special election will take place April 1 through April 3, with the Kevin Hern Senate race expected to draw additional candidates in the coming weeks.
