The Oak Ridge Boys Celebrate Tulsa Music Legend Jim Halsey as City Honors His 50-Year Legacy

For decades, The Oak Ridge Boys have been recognized for their unmistakable harmonies and country music classics, including Elvira and American Made. But one of the most important chapters in the group's success was written far from Nashville, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where legendary music manager Jim Halsey helped transform a gospel quartet into an internationally recognized country music act.

That relationship took center stage on Thursday, October 15, 2026, when Tulsa honored the 96-year-old entertainment executive by unveiling Jim Halsey Way near two of the city's most recognizable music landmarks. Members of The Oak Ridge Boys attended the ceremony, celebrating the man who guided their careers for more than 50 years and helped establish Tulsa as an influential center for the country music business.

Jim Halsey Way Honors a Tulsa Music Industry Pioneer

The new Jim Halsey Way designation recognizes a portion of Easton Street near Cain's Ballroom and the OKPOP Museum, placing the tribute in the heart of Tulsa's music district.

The unveiling ceremony included appearances by The Oak Ridge Boys, city representatives and musicians whose careers were influenced by Halsey's work.

According to KOSU, Halsey's career extends well beyond one legendary group. His management and booking work helped advance the careers of entertainers including Roy Clark, Hank Thompson and Reba McEntire.

At a time when Nashville dominated the country music industry, Halsey built an influential entertainment operation from Oklahoma, connecting performers with recording opportunities, national television appearances and international audiences.

The Route 66 Alliance supported the street dedication, recognizing Halsey's contributions to both the entertainment industry and Tulsa's cultural identity.

The location carries particular significance. Cain's Ballroom has hosted generations of influential musicians, while the nearby OKPOP Museum is dedicated to preserving Oklahoma's contributions to popular culture.

The Oak Ridge Boys' Country Music Success Has Deep Oklahoma Roots

Halsey's relationship with The Oak Ridge Boys began during a pivotal period in the group's musical evolution.

Originally known for gospel performances, the quartet was working to establish itself in country music when Halsey recognized its commercial potential.

His management helped the group secure its early country recording opportunities, including the 1977 album Y'all Come Back Saloon, which helped introduce its distinctive harmonies to a broader audience.

The transition eventually produced some of country music's most recognizable recordings, including the Grammy-winning Elvira, which became a crossover hit in 1981.

The group's success continued through decades of recordings, concert tours and industry recognition, culminating in its 2015 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

During a recent interview with News On 6's LeAnne Taylor, longtime members Duane Allen and William Lee Golden reflected on Halsey's importance to their careers.

Golden credited the Tulsa manager with opening opportunities in country music when the group was struggling to gain acceptance in Nashville.

Their relationship demonstrates how Oklahoma-based music professionals helped shape careers that reached audiences far beyond the state.

Tulsa Celebration Comes as The Oak Ridge Boys Prepare New Music

The street dedication was especially meaningful because The Oak Ridge Boys remain active performers more than five decades after establishing their signature sound.

The group performed at River Spirit Casino Resort in Tulsa on October 15, the same day Halsey received his downtown honor.

Their appearance was part of a continuing touring schedule that has kept the group connected with audiences across the country.

The celebration also comes ahead of another milestone. According to The Oak Ridge Boys' official website, the group is preparing to release Buried Treasures on October 30, 2026, through Lightning Rod Records.

The upcoming collection reflects the group's continuing commitment to recording music even after decades of commercial success.

For Tulsa, the dedication of Jim Halsey Way recognizes something larger than a single manager's accomplishments. It highlights Oklahoma's often-overlooked role in shaping the careers of nationally recognized entertainers.

While Nashville may be synonymous with country music, Jim Halsey's career demonstrates that some of the industry's most influential business decisions were made in Tulsa.

And for The Oak Ridge Boys, that Oklahoma connection remains part of a musical legacy spanning generations.
