Independent Voters Blocked From Oklahoma Primaries After Missed Deadline
For now, Oklahoma independent voters cannot vote in any party’s primary elections for the next two years. The State Election Board made the announcement after determining that the Oklahoma Democratic Party missed the legal deadline to notify the board about keeping its primaries open to independents.
Election Board Says It Followed the Law
Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax says the board was required to close the primaries because it did not receive timely notice.
Democratic officials say they never received the notice, and claim they did send an email expressing their intent to continue allowing independent participation.
Possible Legal Fight Ahead
The Democratic Party says it believes this can still be resolved, but may pursue legal action to reopen the primaries. Independents make up nearly one in five Oklahoma voters, making the decision highly consequential.
