OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — A persistent heat dome has parked over Oklahoma, pushing daytime highs into the upper 90s and producing dangerous heat index values between 100°F and 110°F over the next several days before expected relief later in the week.
How hot will it get & when
Daily highs: upper 90s across much of the state
Heat index: 100–110°F in many areas, creating hazardous conditions for outdoor work and vulnerable populations
Relief forecast: a cold front early next week — and a second front later in the week — could bring highs down into the 70s and 80s
Who is most at risk
Elderly residents and people with chronic health conditions
Infants and young children
Outdoor workers (construction, agriculture)
Those without reliable air conditioning
Heat safety tips (what to do now)
Stay hydrated; drink water regularly even if you don’t feel thirsty
Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours (midday–late afternoon)
Use cooling centers or public air-conditioned spaces if you lack AC at home
Check on elderly neighbors and those with medical needs
“These heat index values are dangerous; people should take precautions and limit outdoor exposure,” the National Weather Service warned.
Community response & infrastructure
Local governments are opening cooling centers and alerting first responders to increased heat-related calls. Utility companies may also issue conservation requests during peak electric demand.
Radio Oklahoma News Network will continue to update forecasts, cooling center locations and heat-related advisories as the situation develops.
