Open Records Request Filed
A national organization that helped block the Oklahoma Catholic Church from opening a publicly funded religious virtual charter school is now seeking information on a proposed Jewish virtual charter school.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State has filed an Open Records Request with the Statewide Charter School Board.
Focus of the Request
The group is asking the board to release all communications with the National Ben GamLa Jewish Charter School Foundation, the organization behind the proposed school.
The inquiry follows the high-profile battle over the attempted launch of St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual Charter School, which was struck down earlier after facing major legal challenges.
Church–State Concerns Remain for School
Americans United says it is monitoring whether public funds might again be used for a school with a religious mission, which raises constitutional concerns under Oklahoma and federal law.
The Charter School Board has not commented on when the records will be released or when the Jewish charter proposal will receive formal consideration.
