Free Firewood Program Expands in Tulsa After Storm Cleanup
A new free firewood Tulsa program is helping residents cope with winter weather while also supporting storm recovery efforts across the metro. City officials say the firewood is being made available as a result of ongoing removal of storm-damaged and fallen trees, turning cleanup debris into a useful resource for the community.
Free firewood Tulsa program tied to storm recovery
The firewood comes from tree removal operations following recent severe weather, including ice and high-wind events that left damaged trees across neighborhoods and public spaces. Officials with the City of Tulsa say repurposing the wood reduces landfill waste while helping residents who rely on firewood for heating or home use.
City leaders say the program also helps crews clear debris more efficiently by providing a designated outlet for usable wood.
Who is eligible and where to pick up firewood
The free firewood is available at the Tulsa Mulch Site, and the program is open to residents of Tulsa, Bixby, and Jenks. Participants must show proof of residency and are asked to bring their own trucks, trailers, or containers. Loading the firewood is self-service and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
According to the Tulsa Authority for Economic Opportunity, similar reuse programs in other cities have helped offset winter heating costs for families during periods of prolonged cold.
Safety and sustainability benefits
Officials emphasize that the firewood program is not just about convenience. The Environmental Protection Agency has long encouraged communities to reuse storm debris when possible to reduce environmental impact and disposal costs.
Residents are reminded to properly season and store firewood before use and to follow fire safety guidelines when burning wood indoors or outdoors.
More availability expected
As storm cleanup continues, city officials say additional firewood may become available. Residents are encouraged to monitor city communications for updates on availability and operating hours at the mulch site.
