Former Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters Files for Divorce

Former Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters has filed for divorce from his wife, Katie Walters, according to public court records filed in Oklahoma.

The filing involving Ryan Walters reportedly cites irreconcilable incompatibility after 15 years of marriage.

Court records indicate the couple shares four young children.

The divorce filing comes months after Ryan Walters resigned from his role as Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction in September 2025.

Ryan Walters Became One of Oklahoma’s Most Controversial Officials

During his time leading the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Ryan Walters became one of the state’s most polarizing political figures.

Much of the national attention surrounding Ryan Walters focused on his efforts to place Bibles inside Oklahoma public school classrooms.

Walters pushed for the purchase of millions of dollars worth of Bibles for Oklahoma schools while also promoting a “God Bless the USA” Bible donation campaign.

Those efforts quickly sparked legal challenges and political backlash across the state.

According to the Oklahoma Supreme Court, legal disputes surrounding the Bible purchase plan eventually paused the proposed spending efforts.

Ryan Walters Resigned in 2025

Former Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters officially resigned from office on September 30, 2025.

Following his resignation, Oklahoma education leadership transitioned to successor Lindel Fields, who later moved away from several Walters-era education initiatives.

The Bible mandate efforts tied to Ryan Walters were eventually dropped after leadership changes inside the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

Walters was later reported to be pursuing private-sector work following his departure from state government.

Court Filing Involves Katie Walters

The newly surfaced filing involving Ryan Walters and Katie Walters is separate from an unrelated 2019 divorce case involving a different individual named “Mary Kate” Walters.

Public court records tied to the current case remain limited as the divorce proceedings continue.

No additional public statements had been released Tuesday morning by either Ryan Walters or Katie Walters regarding the filing.
