Workers Wait for Pay as Shutdown Drags On
As the federal government shutdown enters its second week, thousands of Oklahomans employed by federal agencies are waiting to learn when their paychecks will resume.
Under the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019, both furloughed and essential employees are guaranteed full back pay once the government reopens. However, the law does not protect private-sector contractors or small businesses that depend on federal contracts.
Contractors Face Greater Uncertainty
Oklahoma-based contract workers for agencies such as Tinker Air Force Base and the FAA Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City could face extended financial hardship. “Federal workers will be reimbursed, but subcontractors may never recover those wages,” said one Oklahoma City economist.
The Office of Management and Budget estimates that more than 800,000 federal employees nationwide are affected by the shutdown.
Broader Economic Impact
The shutdown could slow Oklahoma’s economy if it continues for several more weeks, especially in areas dependent on military or aerospace contracts. Economists warn local businesses near large federal employers may also experience ripple effects.
