Enid tornado damage leaves injuries and widespread destruction

Enid tornado damage is being assessed after a powerful storm struck northern Oklahoma Thursday evening.

A large and slow-moving tornado touched down near Enid on April 23, 2026, remaining on the ground for more than 30 minutes and causing significant destruction across the area.

Officials report that at least 10 people were injured, with dozens of homes damaged or destroyed.

Enid tornado damage impacts Vance Air Force Base and homes

The Enid tornado damage extended into both residential areas and critical infrastructure.

The storm struck the southern portion of Vance Air Force Base, causing what officials described as severe damage to fencing, equipment, and operational areas.

The base has since been closed to non-essential personnel as crews work to restore power and water services.

In nearby neighborhoods, including the Gray Ridge area, an estimated 40 to 50 homes were either flattened or sustained major structural damage.

Severe weather response and storm tracking are coordinated by agencies like the National Weather Service (NWS), which will conduct a survey to determine the tornado’s official rating.

Emergency crews respond with overnight rescue efforts

First responders moved quickly following the storm to search for survivors and assess damage.

Emergency crews, including the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, conducted door-to-door searches overnight to locate injured residents and ensure homes were cleared.

Several injured individuals were transported to Oklahoma City hospitals for additional treatment.

Disaster response coordination and emergency management efforts are often supported by agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during large-scale events.

Road closures and shelter support residents

The storm also caused significant disruptions to transportation and daily life in the area.

Highway 81 was closed due to debris and damage, limiting access into Enid.

A temporary shelter has been established at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center to assist displaced residents.

Weather officials noted that this tornado was part of a broader severe weather system that produced multiple tornadoes across northern Oklahoma, including reports of “twin tornadoes” in the region.

Meteorological monitoring and forecasting are also supported by organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which provides data on severe weather patterns.

Officials say damage assessments are ongoing as crews continue recovery efforts.
