Sgt. Thomas Duran remains in critical condition after crash

The city of El Reno, Oklahoma is holding its breath for news of Thomas Duran, a 14-year veteran of the El Reno Police Department. Duran was struck by a vehicle early Friday around 2 a.m. near Watts and Wilson while speaking with a pedestrian. The driver left the scene. The officer was air-lifted to a trauma center in Oklahoma City and remains in critical condition.

Arrest made; investigation underway

Police identified the suspect vehicle as a dark sedan, model year 2020-2023, which veered off the road and crossed railroad tracks before the strike. An arrest has now been made in connection with the hit-and-run.

El Reno Family and friends request prayers and support

Duran’s family and colleagues have made the decision to donate his organs should his condition not improve—honoring his wishes. In addition, the El Reno Police Department is accepting donations to assist the Duran family during this time. Support is coming from across Oklahoma as communities rally behind the officer.

Why this matters for Oklahoma

This incident hits home for many Oklahomans who rely on the men and women in uniform to keep their cities safe. When one of their own is harmed, the ripple effects are felt statewide. The El Reno community’s response reaffirms that solidarity, reminding us how law-enforcement service intersects with public safety and communal concern in our state.
