Tribal government launches food assistance

The Comanche Nation announced emergency support for tribal members losing SNAP benefits during the ongoing government shutdown.

Eligible applicants will receive $75 food gift cards, while households with more than two members will qualify for $150 cards. The cards may be used to purchase groceries and essential food items at participating stores.

Community-driven food program

Tribal leaders said the initiative aims to prevent hunger and hardship among low-income families. In addition to financial aid, the Nation will hold a special deer hunt on tribal lands to stock the community food pantry with venison.

Comanche officials noted that hunting has long played a central role in cultural and food traditions, making it a meaningful way to sustain families during the shutdown.

Broader Comanche tribal response

Other tribes in Oklahoma are considering similar emergency measures as the shutdown disrupts access to federal nutrition and welfare programs. Comanche leaders said they remain committed to ensuring no tribal household goes hungry.
