Choctaw Nation Raises Concerns Over Proposed ICE Facility Near Durant
The Choctaw Nation is voicing strong opposition to a proposed Durant ICE facility, citing concerns about proximity, transparency, and community impact.
Tribal Chief Gary Batton says while Homeland Security officials have publicly stated there are no finalized plans, information suggests a facility may still be under consideration.
Durant ICE Facility Raises Sovereignty and Safety Issues
Chief Batton says the proposed site would be located within approximately 1,000 feet of Choctaw Nation headquarters, a comparison he likened to building a federal detention center near the White House.
Tribal leaders argue such a project would raise serious concerns related to tribal sovereignty, security, and land-use compatibility. The Choctaw Nation says it has not been formally consulted as required under government-to-government protocols.
Federal Agencies Deny Active Plans
Homeland Security representatives have stated publicly that no ICE facility is currently approved for the Durant area. However, the tribe says conflicting information warrants further scrutiny.
The Choctaw Nation plans to continue monitoring developments and engaging federal officials. Details regarding federal detention facilities and siting processes are available through U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.
