Carney Elementary Principal Arrested On Complaint Of Lewd Proposal To A Child

The Carney Elementary principal was arrested Sunday after being booked into the Lincoln County Jail on a complaint of making a lewd or indecent proposal to a child, prompting school officials to immediately remove him from campus while the criminal investigation continues.

Sherman Allen Bellmyer, 59, of Tecumseh, was booked into the Lincoln County Jail on Aug. 9. Booking records maintained by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office show Bellmyer was later released after posting bond. At this time, the complaint remains under investigation, and no additional details about the allegations have been publicly released. An arrest is an allegation, not a conviction, and Bellmyer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Carney Elementary Principal Arrested During Active Investigation

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released information identifying the alleged victim or describing the circumstances that led to Bellmyer's arrest.

Bellmyer has served as principal of Carney Elementary and Middle School since the start of the 2024-2025 school year, overseeing both campuses for the past two academic years.

Before accepting the position in Carney, Bellmyer spent five years with the Mid-Del School District, serving four years as an assistant principal before becoming a head principal for one year.

As of Tuesday morning, no additional court documents detailing the allegations had been filed through the Oklahoma State Courts Network (OSCN), and investigators have not announced when Bellmyer is expected to make his first court appearance.

Because the investigation remains ongoing, authorities have released only limited information regarding the criminal complaint.

School District Removes Employee From Campus

Following Bellmyer's arrest, Carney Public Schools Superintendent Cyal Walden confirmed the principal has been barred from school property and prohibited from participating in any school-related activities while the investigation continues.

District officials also confirmed the school system is fully cooperating with law enforcement throughout the investigation.

The arrest comes just as Oklahoma schools prepare to welcome students back for the fall semester, leaving the district to determine how administrative responsibilities will be handled until the case is resolved.

State regulations governing certified educators allow school districts to remove employees from campus during active criminal investigations, while additional administrative action may be considered through the Oklahoma State Department of Education depending on the outcome of the case.

Carney Public Schools has not announced who will oversee the elementary and middle school campuses while Bellmyer remains away from the district.

Authorities have not released additional information about the investigation, and future court proceedings are expected as prosecutors review the complaint.
