Federal Investigation Leads to Sentencing
A Bryan County couple will serve prison and probation terms for an illegal firearms scheme involving straw purchases. Federal prosecutors say Nathanial and Rebecca Hughes of Calera admitted to buying firearms under false pretenses.
Rebecca reportedly lied on federal forms while attempting to buy guns for her husband, a convicted felon barred from owning firearms.
Couple Court Sentences Announced
Nathanial Hughes was sentenced to more than five years in federal prison, while Rebecca Hughes received three years of probation. The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
Federal Warning
Officials say the case highlights ongoing federal efforts to curb straw purchases — where a legal buyer knowingly buys a firearm for someone who cannot legally possess one. Authorities warn that such acts can result in significant prison time and permanent loss of gun ownership rights.
