Bill Anoatubby Announces Retirement After Nearly Four Decades Leading Chickasaw Nation

Bill Anoatubby, the longtime governor of the Chickasaw Nation, announced Monday that he is retiring and stepping down from office after nearly 40 years as the tribe's chief executive.

Anoatubby said the decision came after prayer, thoughtful reflection, and discussions with his family. His resignation will become effective at noon on June 26, ending one of the longest and most influential leadership tenures in Oklahoma history.

Anoatubby first served as lieutenant governor of the Chickasaw Nation from 1979 to 1987 before becoming the tribe's 32nd governor in 1987.

With the retirement of Bill Anoatubby, current Lieutenant Governor Chris Anoatubby will assume the office of governor for the remainder of the unexpired term.
