BBB Identifies Seasonal Scam Patterns
As holiday shopping and gift giving ramp up, the Better Business Bureau serving central Oklahoma is warning consumers about a seasonal surge in scams that appear every year during this time.
The BBB says scammers often take advantage of increased online shopping, financial stress, and job searches during the holidays.
Three Scams That Increase Every Holiday Season
According to the BBB, three types of scams consistently rise during November and December:
Misleading social media ads promoting deeply discounted products that never arrive or differ drastically from what was advertised
Fake job opportunities targeting people looking to earn extra money for the holidays
Package delivery text messages claiming an urgent need to confirm delivery information
Scams Often Aim for Personal Information
The BBB says these scams are designed to steal personal or financial information, which can then be used for identity theft or fraudulent purchases.
Consumers are urged to pause before clicking links or sharing information, especially if the offer seems too good to be true or creates a sense of urgency.
